Charlotte Observer: Retired race car driver Richard “Dick” Trickle died Thursday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's department in North Carolina.
Dick Trickle was 71 and a long-time resident of Lincoln County. Authorities said he was found dead next to his pick-up truck, which was parked at the Forest Lawn Cemetary. They knew where to locate him because he had called dispatchers and said “there would be a dead body and it would be his.”
Trickle was well known for his short track racing before he started racing for NASCAR in the early 80's. He became NASCAR’s rookie of the year in 1998, at age 48, the oldest driver to do so.
