TikTok Bride Called Out For Taking Husband’s Last Name

Some wedding traditions go out of style, but one that seems to stand the test of time? Brides taking their husband’s last name. Like a lot of brides, when Monica Patterson said “I do” to her husband Sam, she changed her last name to his. But what she wasn’t expecting? Being called out for doing it.

Following a six-year long distance relationship, Sam moved to the U.S. from the U.K. to be with Monica and the couple tied the knot in February. They documented their wedding on their joint TikTok account, which has more than 2-million followers and their YouTube channel. After their nuptials, the newlyweds shared a vlog, “Changing Her Last Name,” that shows the process of Monica applying to legally change her last name from her maiden name, Gartner, to Sam’s name, Patterson.

And that video was criticized by some of their followers, who thought Sam was forcing his bride to take his name, but they couldn’t have been more wrong. The name change was something Monica wanted to do, not something Sam made her do. “I love my family, but it's my belief that when you get married you change your name. I'm sure if I had wanted to keep my last name, we would have had that discussion,” Monica explains. “I'm not being forced, I'm not being dominated... I'm so happy.”

Thought Starters:

  • Why do people assume she doesn’t want to change her name? And why do they care either way?
  • Did you keep your maiden name when you got married? Why was that important to you?
  • Did you and your partner disagree about changing names when you married? What did you end up deciding to do?
