Lucky in Lunch

A Delaware couple turned their lunch into a lottery win when they ordered a clam appetizer.

Scott and Katie Overland dined at a beachfront restaurant in Rehoboth Beach over the summer and ordered the clams as an appetizer. At first, when the dish came to the table, it had peppers on it, despite asking the server to leave the peppers off. But they decided not to send it back, and it's a good thing they didn't. Katie was chomping down on a clam and bit into something hard, which she just assumed was a piece of the shell. But after looking more closely she noticed what appeared to be a purple-colored pearl.

The Overland's did a little research online and learned that a purple pearl is pretty rare and that it is likely worth a lot of money. They brought it to a gemologist and just recently got the appraisal. The small one-and-a-half karat pearl is worth over $4,000. The Overland's could sell it, but they say they'll probably hang onto it because it's a great story. (Philly Voice)

Scott's Thoughts:

  • Sell the pearl. Who couldn't use $4,000?
  • Waiter, I'll have the clams, too.
  • Katie is lucky. She could have swallowed the pearl or simply discarded it with the shell.
