Florida Man Doesn’t Exactly Hide $6M In Fraudulent Tax Refunds: When you decide to scam the IRS and it works, you might want to keep a lower profile than Matthew Meredith. The 39-year-old submitted five claims for a tax refund that totaled over $170M, and the IRS actually sent him a check for $6,374,576.92 for the first claim he submitted. Authorities say Meredith used the money to buy a waterfront mansion in St. Petersburg and allegedly bought six luxury Mercedes-Benz vehicles with a total value of over $800k. He was under supervised release from a federal drug conviction when he pulled the scam, but he’s now facing up to 75 years in federal prison on the new fraud charges and would have to return the money if convicted.
