Dry (or Damp) January isn’t the only New Year’s challenge people are taking on … There’s also Veganuary, where people are encouraged to go 30 days without eating any animal products. In 2022, 36% of those who were not vegan before Veganuary decided to stay vegan after taking on the challenge. 74% did not stay vegan after the 30 days but planned to eat more plant-based foods going forward.
Losing weight is always a top New Year’s resolution … and it seems that people have some pretty big weight loss goals for 2023. A new survey found that the average person wants to drop 29 pounds this year. 78% of those surveyed also vowed to exercise more this year than last year. And in 2023 it’s less about hitting the gym and more about hitting the road. 77% said they planned to get their exercise by walking, 35% said running was their workout of choice, and 32% said they were going to hike more. Weightlifting (45%) and yoga (26%) were also popular workout choices.
Resolutions are hard work … About 40% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions each year, vowing to do things like eat healthier, get more exercise and save more money. But while making a resolution is easy, making real changes is hard. Really hard. Researchers found that it takes a whopping 66 days to turn a resolution into a habit. That’s more than two months of persistent work and dedication before that habit really takes hold.
