Expert Embraces “Messy” Home After Three Kids

Marie Kondo may be the queen of tidy, but she admits her house isn’t so tidy these days. The decluttering guru and author of “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” has a good reason for her shift in priorities - her three children. And because of them, she’s had to rethink what sparks joy in her life.

Many of us can relate to this, there are only so many hours in a day and something has to give. And when it comes down to keeping an immaculate house or spending time with your kids, Kondo is choosing her kids. “My home is messy, but the way I am spending my time is the right way for me at this time at this stage of my life,” she explains.

Kondo and her husband welcomed their third child in 2021 and it’s led to her doing things a little differently. “Up until now, I was a professional tidier, so I did my best to keep my home tidy at all times,” she shares. “I have kind of given up on that in a good way for me. Now I realize what is important to me is enjoying spending time with my children at home.”

Scott's Thoughts:

  • If Marie Kondo can give up on tidying, can we all give up on tidying, too?
  • Who else is feeling a lot less guilty about their messy, cluttered homes right about now?
  • Have you tried Kondo’s method of tidying, where you only keep things that “spark joy?”
