Study: Having 1 Quality Conversation A Day Can Make You Happier

Do you talk to your bestie every day? If not, you may want to start because new research shows having just one quality conversation with a friend per day could be good for your well-being.

In a study of more than 900 people, scientists identified seven common types of communication: catching up, meaningful talk, joking around, showing care, listening, valuing others and their opinions, and offering sincere compliments. They asked participants to engage in one of those, then rate their feelings of things like stress, connection, anxiety, well-being and loneliness.

And it turns out, those who did any kind of communication during the day reported a boost in well-being, happiness and connection, and less stress than those who ghosted their pals all day. But even better? Those who had more than one quality conversation a day felt even better. “We can change how we feel on any given day through communication,” explains study author Jeffrey Hall, a professor of communication studies at University of Kansas. “Just once is all it takes.”

Scott's Thoughts:

  • Consider this a sign to plan a coffee date with your BFF, or at least pick up the phone and call them.
  • Do you talk to your bestie every day? If not, how often do you talk to them?
  • It sucks to have lost touch with some of your best friends through the years but life happens.
