The U.S. Supreme Court is setting aside some major issues dividing the country to deal with something a little more pressing -- such as whiskey and dog toys.
Jack Daniel's has unleashed a lawsuit against VIP Products, a company that makes a line of dog chew toys that parody the famous whiskey brand. The one item at the center of the trademark case is a chew toy shaped like a whiskey bottle.
It features a label that resembles the Jack Daniel's label but instead reads, "Bad Spaniels." And instead of saying "Old No. 7 Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey," it says, "Old No. 2 on your Tennessee Carpet."
Jack Daniel's argues that the dog toy violates trademark law, while VIP claims the items are obvious parodies and therefore protected under the First Amendment. The appeals court sided with VIP, so it's now up to the highest court in the land to rule on it.
