A creature known as “the vampire fish” has been spotted off the Dutch island of Texel and it’s sparking fear in the hearts of some residents. The creature is called a sea lamprey and the vampire reference comes from the fact that it literally sucks its prey’s blood through its swirling, circular teeth. Researchers say they resemble eels without jaws.
This particular little guy they found measures almost three feet long, which is consistent with a two-year-old lamprey. These guys aren’t new to the planet either. The sea lamprey dates back 400 million years.
