A Million Pennies for Your Thoughts?

A man in Los Angeles was cleaning out a family member's home when he stumbled upon a pile of bank bags containing one million pennies.

John Reyes was going through his father-in-law's belongings and made a discovery didn't make a whole lot of sense, or cents, to him. It was a pile of old bank bags containing a total of one million pennies. It's unclear exactly where the bags of pennies came from or why his father-in-law had them. Reyes says he's received offers from some coin collectors, but has been advised not to do anything until more is known about these bags. It's already been determined that the pennies are at least 40 years-old because they are copper, and the U.S. switched from copper to zinc in the early '80s. It is for that reason why coin collectors may be willing to pay up to $25,000 for the pennies, which would normally be worth $10,000. (KTLA-TV

Hot Takes:

  • Be careful handling those pennies. They could be very hot.
  • The family is not even really sure who the pennies belonged to. The house had once been used as a bed and breakfast.
  • They should just sell them to a coin collector and be done with it. Who wants all these pennies laying around?
