  • Gifting a car for the holidays is a concept dating back only 20 years.
  • Lexus is credited with introducing the idea in 1999 with its "December to Remember" sales event.
  • Car sales do tend to increase in December: auto sales were 8.28% higher than average monthly sales between 2005-2021.
  • December sales skew towards luxury cars, like BMW, Lexus, Lincoln, and Mercedes.
  • People do indeed gift cars during December, based on dealership observations.
  • Regardless of the phenomenon, this year is not the ideal time to buy a car as a present based on pricing and availability.
