An Unusual Find

You never know what you might find tucked away inside a piece of furniture. Maybe some loose change or an old TV remote, but an old notebook containing an activity a log for a World War Two military ship? That's a new one.

A Massachusetts woman contacted the NOAA Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary to let them know that she found a notebook in an old piece of furniture containing a handwritten log for the USS Amesbury which, today, sits on the ocean floor 10 miles west of the Florida Keys as an artificial reef. The author of the notebook is unknown, as is the reason why it was tucked inside the furniture. It shows many of the ship's voyages between 1944 and 1945, which included journeys between Florida and New York, and across the Atlantic to England. An entry written on April 7th, 1945 reads, "war ended with Germany.”

The USS Amesbury was a U.S. naval destroyer escort which was later converted to a high speed transport vessel. It was retired in 1946 and stationed in Florida. (USA Today)
