A Key Sign Of A “Functioning Alcoholic”

By definition, a “functioning alcoholic” is someone with “an addiction to alcohol, but manages to still go about their daily routine, therefore their drinking problem goes unseen.” According to experts on the subject, one telltale sign of a functioning alcoholic is the “inability to call it quits after just one drink,” even after telling everyone that that’s their plan, but then finding an excuse to stay out and drink it up all night. They’ll also highlight their ability to “pay their bill” or “get their kids to school” as proof that they’re just fine and dandy because “alcoholics can’t do that.”

PARENT DRIVES IN FRONT OF SCHOOL BUS TO STOP DUI SUSPECT

Parents in Sebring, Florida, took immediate action when they suspected that their children's bus driver was impaired during a graduation trip to Daytona Lagoon. The bus driver, who was later charged with DUI, child abuse without great bodily harm, and culpable negligence, was transporting 30 students and six adult chaperones when passengers became concerned about his driving. Despite their pleas, the driver refused to stop the bus, prompting parents to call 911.

Mother Maggie Hucke recounts the tense moments when the bus ran through multiple red lights, and the children were screaming in fear. As the situation grew more dangerous, parents Gissel and Freddie Diaz decided to intervene directly by driving their car ahead of the bus to force it to stop. They succeeded in bringing the bus to a stop in a roundabout, likely preventing a disaster.

The community is calling the Diazes heroes for their bravery in stopping the bus. Despite the frightening experience, the group eventually reached Daytona Lagoon and were able to enjoy their trip. The bus driver’s employer, Holiday Coach Lines, expressed shock, saying the driver had passed all drug and alcohol screenings. The bus driver was fired by the company immediately after his arrest.
