Landing a plane is hard. Landing a plane while “blind” sounds impossible. On Sunday, Austrian Airlines flight 0S434 flew smack dab into a hailstorm while on its way to Vienna International Airport. The hail they hit ended up smashing the windshield and managed to rip the nose cone off the plane. Reportedly, the pilots weren’t able to spot the storm on the plane’s radar (found beneath the nose) and had no view of where they were flying due to the destruction of the windows. Still, thanks to the use of the instrument landing system, they were able to safely make an emergency landing. Everyone was safe, but the plane is expected to be “out of service” for “several weeks.”
