When you think of high-tech prison security, geese probably aren’t the first things you think of. In Sao Pedro de Alcantara, Brazil, a prison came up with the idea of using geese instead of guard dogs. Called “geese agents,” the nine birds “patrol the grassy strip of land between the inner fence and the outer wall.” Anyone who’s approached wild geese know then can be “fiercely territorial” and “surprisingly intimidating.” As a result, anyone who enters their domain is greeted by “a deafening cacophony of honks and shrieks that serve to alert guards” if someone gets an idea that they might try an escape.
