A Harris poll found that 61% of Gen Z and Millennial workers believe that “employers should shut down their organizations for the whole week of July 4th.” That’s compared to 32% of Gen Xers and Boomers. 56% of Gen Z and Millennial workers believe that “working during the week of July 4th should be taboo in work culture.” Just 33% Gen X and Boomer workers feel the same way. 53% of Gen Z and Millennial workers say, “I barely get any work done around July 4th.” The survey found that Gen Z and Millennial employees say the week off would make them more productive, inspire them to put in more effort into their work, and take on more responsibility in the workplace.
What would employees be willing to do to have the whole week of July 4th off? 62% of Gen Z and Millennials workers surveyed said they would make trade-offs for their workplace to be closed for a week around July 4th – compared to 29% of Gen Xers and Boomers. 33% of Gen Z and Millennials workers said they would take a salary cut if their company closed for the whole week of July 4th.
Scott's Thought:
- Why not just use your vacation time and take the whole week? I mean if your business gives you a July 4th holiday, take the other 4 as vacation and get a whole week out of it and only lose 4 vacation days. I think closing down businesses for a whole week to celebrate the 4th is extreme. But then Gen Z and Millennial workers seem to have a different point of view about work than my generation. (Good Lord. Saying that out loud just made me feel very old.)
