HALF OF AMERICANS SAY THEY’RE LESS “SCAM SAVVY” BECAUSE OF AI

From shopping to housing to romance, it seems like scammers are everywhere and they’re getting harder to detect. And it turns out, artificial intelligence may be making it easier for them. According to a new survey, 48% of Americans think the rise of AI has led to them being less “scam-savvy” than ever before.

The poll of 2-thousand U.S. adults looks into how people feel about artificial intelligence and finds people see both the pros and cons:

  • Only 18% of respondents feel “very confident” they could identify a scam before falling for it.
  • A third say it would be hard for them to identify a potential scam if the scammer was pretending to be someone they personally know.
  • Potential scams people are concerned about with AI include creating fake news (68%), robo-callers with realistic voices (67%) and sending texts from familiar phone numbers (62%).
  • For some, the fears are justified because 34% have fallen victim to a scam in the past, including 40% who’ve had it happen in the last year and 8% who were scammed as recently as last month.
  • The most common scams they’ve fallen for include fake sales or listings (29%), financial operations (29%) and email phishing (28%).
  • Top concerns with AI include privacy and data (67%), fear of it becoming uncontrollable (65%) and fraud concerns (61%).
  • But the survey finds it’s not all doom and gloom when it comes to the technology, as 38% of those polled have a positive view of AI.
  • Over a third (38%) use AI for everyday tasks like translating languages (48%), writing emails or tests (48%) or choosing recipes (41%).
  • Overall, 80% of respondents believe AI usage should be regulated more strictly because of scams and deception.

Scott's Thoughts:

  • Well, it would be nice if AI was good enough that Netflix sends recommendations we’d actually watch!
  • AI is a double edged sword. Good and bad parts.
  • I get a lot of attempted scam calls. I ignore them.
