Study: Travel Could Slow The Aging Process

We’re all getting older every day and while there’s nothing we can do to change that, there are things we can do to keep it from happening so fast. And luckily for us, it turns out taking vacations is one of them. According to new research, leisurely travel doesn’t just broaden our horizons, it comes with health benefits, too.

A new study from Australia shows that one of those benefits is slowing the signs of aging. It finds that the positive experiences while traveling could actually help enhance our physical and mental health, by relieving chronic stress and boosting the immune system. If the trip involves more movement, or eating healthy, fresh, local foods, even better.

“Travel promotes physical activity, such as walking, hiking or cycling, which enhances cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and overall well-being,” explains lead researcher Fangli Hu. “It could also foster social interaction, whether with locals or travel companions, which can improve mood, reduce feelings of loneliness, and enhance cognitive function.”
