Many people these days are treating the shower like daily spa treatment, often spending as much as an hour in there washing, shaving, and just relaxing in the hot water. It’s a trend called the “everything shower” that started on TikTok. But dermatologists are warning it's way too long to be in the shower and it's not good for you. Over-washing can cause redness, dryness and itching, and it can damage the skin barrier. It can actually make your skin look prematurely old. It's also bad for the environment, especially in drought-stricken areas. Taking a 30- to 45-minute shower uses up to 75 to 110 gallons of water. It also significantly raises your water bill. The average shower in the United States is just short of eight minutes and uses approximately 15.8 gallons of water. Experts say the ideal duration of a shower, to sufficiently clean yourself in an efficient manner, is no more than 5 to 10 minutes.
