JMU grad charged after marijuana is intercepted

A Harrisonburg man has been arrested after a package sent to him from Oregon was intercepted.

Virginia State Police said they alerted the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office to the suspicious package on Friday, March 16 and a narcotics canine responded to check it.

A search of the package revealed approximately 10 pounds of marijuana.

The RUSH Drug Task Force, made up of members from Virginia State Police, Harrisonburg Police Department, and the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office was contacted to begin an investigation.

Police said their investigation led them to an apartment in Harrisonburg and a warrant was obtained to search his home.

They said a James Madison University graduate was living in the apartment and the suspicious package was intended for him, additionally, police said they took one pound of marijuana, eight grams of mushrooms, and a Ruger .45 caliber pistol from the apartment.

Tristan Joseph Nelson, 27, of Harrisonburg was charged with two felony counts of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and one count of possession of a firearm while in possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.
