BREAKING: Police Make Arrest After Early Morning Manhunt

Roanoke Police have arrested a wanted subject after a manhunt near Northside High School this morning. 

Police said Samuel Clay Mitchell, 44, of Vinton was wanted on four different charges in Roanoke City, including failure to appear on possession of cocaine, destruction of property, and two counts of entering property.  New charges have not yet been announced. 

Mitchell was taken into custody in a wooded area between Waffle House and the high school around 8:30 a.m. by SWAT officers.

Police say they recovered a firearm out of his vehicle related to the incident and other indcators lead police to believe he was armed. 

Kingdom Kids Child Care and the Children's Discovery Center are closed today.  That decision was made earlier when the manhunt was active and residents living on Northside High School Roadwere asked to stay inside their homes. 

Around 3:00 a.m. Friday a Roanoke County Police officer responded near Quality Inn off Peters Creek and Thirlane Roads for an unrelated call. While responding to that call, the officer observed a suspicious vehicle with a male inside near Quality Inn. When approached, the male took off on foot into a wooded area behind Quality Inn. The officer ran the tag number of the vehicle to discover outstanding charges in a neighboring jurisdiction. Roanoke County Police, assisted by Virginia State Police, set a perimeter in the area between Quality Inn and Northside High School. There was a heavy police presence in that area, including nearby homes and businesses. Police issued a RoCo Alert to area residents asking them to secure their doors and remain inside while police conducted the search.
