Saturday's Storms Cause Smith Mountain Lake To Reach Full Pond

Heavy rain pounded the Roanoke and Blackwater River watersheds causing heavy inflow into Appalachian Power's Smith Mountain Lake hyrdo project in southwestern Virginia.

It's estimated that five inches of rain fell within a few hours Saturday night causing rivers and creeks to flood.

Appalachian Power says that the water levels, which are registering slightly above full pond status, should decrease over the next couple of days barring any other unusual weather events.

Full pond is 495 feet.

"This is a relatively rare occurrence that happens when the Smith Mountain Lake level exceeds 795 feet 'full pond elevation,'" Appalachian Power said.

Appalachian Power says they will continue to monitor conditions.
