Winter Storm Watch For Southwest And Central VA Goes Into Effect Tomorrow

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of our area as wintry weather will likely cause slippery roads from Wednesday night into Thursday afternoon.

The worst road conditions will occur Thursday morning.

Power outages will also be possible, especially in locations west of Lynchburg. Ice could build up to 0.30” thick.

We have a 100% chance of precipitation as another large blob of rain heads our direction.

Freezing rain and sleet will be the most prevalent wintry precipitation types, though brief mountain snow will be possible.

Freezing rain will be most likely west and north of Lynchburg. This includes any county that touches Interstate 81 plus Floyd, Franklin, Bedford, Amherst and Nelson counties. Freezing rain creates the worst driving conditions as freezing rain is “regular rain” that freezes to objects 32° or colder.

Sleet will also be occurring with the freezing rain. Sleet can fall in locations where temperatures are slightly warmer than 32° (as temperatures are below freezing at cloud level).

Roads will vary from wet to slippery in the Lynchburg area and Southside. Roads could be/will be very slippery/icy where temperatures are colder than 32°

All local spots will transition to “all rain” by Thursday 3pm. Temperatures will rise into the upper 30s.

Most local rain totals will be in the 1” to 2” range.
