Non-Profit Pub Raises Money For Charity

With all the bike riders, backyards with chicken coops, and artisanal coffee, Portland, Oregon is known as the hipster city. And now they’ve even got a nonprofit pub, so you can get a pint of local beer and support a charity of your choice at the same time.

The Oregon Public House looks like any other pub - they have beer, food, and music - but it’s also America’s first nonprofit pub. They do make a profit, they just donate all of it to charities. “Our menu options are “eat, drink, give,” explains founder Ryan Saari. “So you place your order of food, you place your order of drink, and then you choose where you want your profits to go to from a list of charities.”

And every six months they change the group of charities customers can choose to support with their order. In the last three years, the pub has donated over $100,000 to causes like PTAs, urban farms, homeless teens and cancer survivors. They’re making a difference, one beer at a time!
