Family Vacations: Still As Popular As Ever?

Summer vacation will be here before you know it, which means parents are going to have to start thinking about how to occupy their kids’ time. And for a lot of folks, a family vacation is the perfect solution.

According to a new AAA poll, 35% of Americans are planning a family vacation in the next 12 months that’s 50 miles or more away from home, and includes two or more immediate family members. That number is unchanged from last year, which we guess means last year's family trips went well.

And families aren’t planning just one trip with the whole gang. The survey finds that 70% of family travelers will take one or two trips with the fam, while 28% are taking three or more, which is an increase of 13% from last year.

  • Road trips are by far the most popular types of vacations for families (70%), and higher gas prices than last year hasn’t changed that. In fact, 10% more folks are planning to get behind the wheel for their vacation this year, as compared to last year.  Other popular family vacations include national parks (51%),  theme parks (40%), international destinations (33%), guided tours (22%) and cruises (20%).
