Authorities say a joint investigation has uncovered the plot to kill officers and their families. The Carlsbad Police Department, the Eddy County Sheriff's Office and the Pecos Valley Drug Task Force came across evidence that seemed to suggest a plan was in the works during a recent drug investigation and looked into its credibility.
A person of interest in the drug case pointed officials to the murder plot. It was quickly deemed credible and the targets and their families were protected.
A sweep of more than 50 homes, with 100 possible suspects netted 20 people who were arrested. Eddy County Sheriff Mark Cage says the suspects' motive was revenge and they planned to use guns and possibly explosives to kill Eddy County, Carlsbad, and Artesia law enforcement officers. Cage stresses “This is not a third world country, where warlords and drug smugglers make and enforce the rules. This is Eddy County, New Mexico, where there are laws in place and we enforce the rules.”
The investigation is continuing with more arrests expected.Source: KOB-TV
