Two thousand babies who were born at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights, Ohio since 2009 all have one thing in common. The very first birthday gift they received came from a woman named Barbara Lowe.

The 90-year-old great-grandmother combines her love of knitting and babies to make special hats for all of the newborns at the hospital. She started eight years ago and so far has kitted more than 2,000 hats.

Lowe, who has 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, says, "I love babies and I love to knit. Anytime I receive a gift that someone made, it means more to me than if they bought it in a store. I wanted to give these babies something special as they started out."

The gifts have been well-received from everyone. A hospital spokesperson says, "It’s not only a lovely gift that parents appreciate, but it provides us with a teachable moment. We talk about the cap and explain how important it is to keep a baby warm, especially when they are outside in inclement weather." (People)
