SCHOOL DAZE: Football Yes, Graduation No

SCHOOL DAZE: Football Yes, Graduation No

One of the great things now that we’re starting to get COVID under control is that sporting events are opening back up to fans.

Another sure sign that things are getting back to normal – actual college is once again taking a back seat to college sports.

Rutgers University in New Jersey decided months ago that its various graduation ceremonies would be virtual in 2021. It stinks not to be able to walk and get your degree, but safety first -- right?

Not so fast. The Rutgers Football spring game is scheduled for Thursday, May 20th. And they’re letting 5000 fans into the stadium to watch what is basically a glorified practice.

Even more ridiculous: The game is going on at the same time as the Rutgers Business School virtual commencement. So about 1000 graduates and their families will be watching their graduation at home while 5000 people plus all the players, coaches, staff and media are in the stadium.

Scott's Thoughts:

  • This is seriously tone deaf. It’s school, not a sports franchise.
  • It just goes to show what the priorities are at some of these major universities.
  • Rutgers is a huge school. Sure, the business school has only about 1000 grads, but the school actually has like 18,000 total.
  • When Rutgers decided to join the Big 10, part of the deal was making football a major priority.
  • Let’s be honest -- this isn’t the only place this is going on.
