TOM CRUISE HAS THE NEED FOR SPEED
The new Tom Cruise blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick features him running in a couple scenes. And with the amount of running the actor has done -- 44 of his 52 movies feature running scenes -- ESPN decided to ask a couple of experts if Cruise is any good at it.
Georgia track coach -- and four-time NCAA champion -- Caryl Smith-Gilbert watched every Cruise movie run and says he has good technique and would be great at the 800 meters or even the mile because she thinks he could sustain his top-end speed.
Three-time Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee says that Cruise's height of 5-foot-7 is helpful. "A lot of powerful runners are 5-foot-6 or below," she said. She also believes that she and her husband, former U.S. track coach Bob Kersee, could make him even faster. "I believe we could work with him, see what he's got. We could probably get him to 11.5 [in the 100 meters] with ease."
Both Smith-Gilbert and Joyner-Kersee conclude that Cruise is a very good runner. Joyner-Kersee adds, "I've been to the Olympics. And he has pulled me in: Tom Cruise is good at running."
