Losing weight is hard, but research shows that keeping it off is nearly impossible. Studies have found that most people put the weight back on in two years and by five years, they may regain almost all of it. And even worse? A lot of people end up gaining more weight than they lost. But even though these stats are discouraging, focusing on the end goal of better health and longevity can boost your chance of success.

For a successful weight maintenance plan, you have to think long term. These tips could help keep the pounds from creeping back:

  • Focus on metabolic health numbers, not the numbers on the scale - We think about how many pounds we want to lose, but studies show that focusing on the numbers related to health — like your lipid panel, your blood-sugar numbers and how much quality sleep you’re getting — may make more of an impact to changes in the long run.
  • Learn from weight maintenance warriors - Research reveals that people who successfully lost an average of 50 pounds and kept it off for three years or more were more likely to:
    • Make healthy food choices the majority of the time
    • Journal their food intake
    • Have a higher level of physical activity
    • And continue to make goal-setting a priority
  • Move more - While diet may play a more significant role in shedding pounds, to keep them from coming back, you have to be more active. According to one study, women need to exercise at least 55 minutes a day, five days a week.
  • Fall in love with protein - Another recent study finds that higher protein diets are linked with a greater ability to maintain weight loss. Adding protein to every meal and snack is a good start.
  • Take a break from dieting - Staying on a diet long term isn’t the solution for success, in fact, research shows those who do are more likely to fail. A randomized controlled trial found that people who took breaks from dieting were actually more likely to lose weight and keep it off.
