Buried Treasure
It's not exactly a pirate's booty, but a couple in New Jersey recently found some buried treasure in their front lawn.
Richard Gilson was excavating the front yard when he came upon what he thought were deep roots from a tree or bush. Not thinking anything of it, he dug them up and tossed them aside. But then later on, while taking a closer look at them, he noticed that they're not roots at all. They were actually wads of cash wrapped up in burlap. Each roll of cash contained $1,000 and the bills dated back to 1934. He concluded that the money was buried there by the home's previous owner, a man named James Dempsey. Gilson did a little research and was able to find Dempsey's granddaughter who lives in Colorado. She told him that her grandfather told her mother to bury the money in the yard and the family later tried several times to find it but never did. Gilson says he thinks it's a great story and has no plans to spend the money. (WABC-TV)
Scott's Thoughts:
- The money was from around the Great Depression and was probably buried because the owner didn't trust the banks.
- Burying the money may have been a good idea, but not remembering where it was buried was a problem.
- It's a cool story, but I don't know if it's worth $2,000. I would spend the money.
- Should he give it to the granddaughter? Split it maybe?
