Home Sweet Homes

Home Sweet Homes

Everyone loves a two-for-one deal, but how about an 87-for-the price of one deal?

A homebuyer in Nevada recently purchased a new house for $594,000. You can imagine their shock when they were later informed by the county assessor's office that they were in fact the owners of 86 other properties as well. Apparently, someone in the title company's office made a clerical mistake which resulted in the homebuyer being listed as the owner of 84 other plots of land belonging to a development company, as well as two other properties near Reno. Some of the properties already had houses with people living in them. All parties involved in the mix-up are working to correct it, but it will require the homebuyer to transfer ownership of the extra properties back to the developer. (USA Today)

Scott's Thoughts:

  • The homebuyer holds all the power here, and if they don't want to cooperate, they don't have to.
  • For now, $594,000 bought someone several million dollars worth of property.
  • If this has to go to court, it would be hard to imagine a judge not seeing this as an honest mistake.
