Lawn Mower Hits Old Pipeline And Spills 180k Gallons Of Oil
Usually, the worst mistake a landscaper can make is to mess up while edging the driveway, but a worker in Chester County, Tennessee has set a new low mark. The landscaper reportedly ran over a 72-year-old oil pipeline and spilled more than 180k gallons of crude oil near drinking water sources and wildlife.
The accident caused a seven-inch puncture in the line, which was highly pressurized. While it did affect some wildlife, the good news is that the EPA recovered 75% of the spilled oil, and officials are monitoring the water from the Memphis Sand Aquifer recharge zone nearby, which feeds into Tennessee’s largest groundwater source.
