Three-Ton “Hummer-Sized” Sunfish Now Holds The Record For Largest Fish Ever Found
It was found last year, but it’s only recently been made official; a three-ton sunfish found in Portugal has now been certified as the heaviest bony fish ever according to Guinness World Records. The fish was found floating in the North Atlantic Ocean, picked up by local officials, and brought back to port to be examined by scientists.
The fish was 12 feet tall and 11 feet long, and weight 6,049 pounds, which is about as much as a Hummer or a fully-grown white rhino. It was almost a thousand pounds heavier than the previous record-holder, a 5,070-pound sunfish caught in Japan in 1996.
