Couple Who Had 1st Date On Tandem Bike Now Cycling Globe To Break Record

A couple from the U.K. who share a passion for cycling are now trying to break a world record on a bike together. Husband and wife Steven Massey and Laura Massey-Pugh had their first date on a tandem bicycle and they’re riding on one now as they’re attempting to become the fastest male-female duo to pedal around the world on a tandem bike.

They hope to set the new Guinness World Record by pedaling through 21 countries across five continents in just 180 days. After setting off on their journey in June, the couple has already ridden more than 13-thousand miles and they’re three-quarters of the way finished. So far, they’ve biked through locations including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Thailand, Malaysia, Hungary, Romania, Turkey and Bulgaria.

During their bicycle adventure, Steve and Laura have hit some bumps, from a stomach bug in India to Visa issues in Azerbaijan. And they’re enduring changing weather conditions and tough terrain, like steep climbs in the Rocky Mountains. These issues have meant they lost valuable time, so to make sure they beat the current record of 263 days, the couple has only stopped once for a break. “The relentless nature of getting up, riding 100 miles or more every day, eating and sleeping is tough,” Laura explains. “We don’t get to sightsee at all.” Now they’ve got 4-thousand miles left to go and are set to finish up in early December, so they’ll be home in time for the holidays.

Scott's Thoughts:

  • If they still like each other after riding around the world in 180 days on a tandem bike, they can handle anything together!
  • Most impressive thing my partner and I have done is work together on the radio to help charities like St. Jude and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
  • I tried to break the record for high fives in a 24 hour period a couple times in the past for charity but came up a few thousand short.
