What's the 411 on 411? Thanks to the Internet, many people with landline phones who still rely on the operator for assistance, won't be able to starting in the new year. AT&T has announced it is discontinuing both 411 for information and dial 0 for assistance starting on January 1st. Both services will be dropped in 21 states. Other telephone services have already phased it out, and AT&T already got rid of it for wireless customers a year ago. The ease of the Internet and diminishing landline use across the country has been making these services obsolete. AT&T says it has only 8.5 million landline customers in the country.
Scott's Thoughts:
- I can remember using it especially at payphones. Something else gone but not forgotten.
- Since they're looking to get rid of things that nobody uses, they can probably stop sending me telephone books.
- How many people do you think will be dialing 0 to speak with an operator on December 31st?
