Nothing supports Wisconsin's claim as "America's Dairyland" quite like a canal of melted butter.
A fire broke out last week at Associated Milk Producers Inc. in the town of Portage, Wisconsin, causing a stream of melted butter to flow into a nearby canal. The fire happened to start in a room where butter was stored and got so hot that melted butter began to flow out of the facility. The slippery mess and smoky condition made it difficult to battle the blaze, and some firefighters said they were knee-deep in butter. Ultimately, aerial equipment had to be flown in to put it out. The Department of Natural Resources sent a crew to the scene to assess the damage caused by the butter -- some of which ended up in storm sewers and clogged the canal. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. (Food and Wine)
