A team of Israeli scientists says it’s trained rats to sniff out early signs of lung cancer in human urine. During a trial, the mammals were allowed to smell human urine samples, some of which came from lung cancer patients; if they spent longer smelling a sample, it supposedly indicated that they were smelling cancer.
Did it work? The team says that the rats accurately spotted lung cancer samples 93% of the time. They’re now moving on to a wider trial for the technique, which they say could be used to detect other forms of cancer.
