It’s almost never good when your child gets their hands on your phone and decides to do a little unsupervised shopping. Jessica Aiwuyor nearly learned this the hard way when her twin daughters, Efosa and Esosa, hopped on her Instacart app to order some food. The mom took to Twitter to share, “My six year old twins almost purchased close to $800 worth of snacks using my Instacart app.”
Her tweet, which has gone viral with close to 5-million views, lists some of the foods the girls tried to order, including four packages of Lunchables and Korean-style dumplings, multiple packages of Oreo ice cream sandwiches and Tyson Any’tizers, apple juice, Kool-Aid Bursts and a gallon of Turkey Hill lemonade. They also almost ordered 35 cases of Capri Sun Fruit Punch and 28 bags of chips, and the subtotal for the order was $757.57 before tax and tip. The mom tweets that her daughters almost completed the purchase, but couldn’t figure out the last few steps of the process, so it didn’t go through.
But it didn’t take long for the tweet to reach Instacart’s official account, which responded the next morning. “Let’s make this wishlist a reality,” their tweet reads. “Check your DM’s” And by three that afternoon, the Aiwuyor twins scored their snacks, all for free, thanks to Instacart. Their mom tweeted a photo of her girls proudly standing by their food haul, which included almost everything they asked for, along with some healthier options, like carrots and bananas, and just two cases of Capri Suns, not 35.
- “They were dancing, screaming and happy, just bouncing all over the place,” Aiwuyor says. But she turned the experience into a teaching moment. “Never again, you cannot do this again,” she told them. “Not every company is going to respond this way, and they will be expecting mommy and daddy to pay for whatever it is you order. So do not do this again.”

Scott's Thoughts:
- Thank goodness for those tricky extra steps at checkout!
- My phone is set up to prevent people from doing that. My kids only bought a video game or two without my permission.
- If Instacart was a thing when I was a kid, I would have done this. Lots of candy and cookies!
