When someone we love has a baby, we want to help them out, but we don’t always know how to do it. Fortunately, the Internet’s favorite grandma - Barbara Costello - known as "Brunch With Babs" online, has some ideas.
Babs is famous for her advice and she’s back with more of it. In a now-viral video, she shares “how to mother a new mother,” based on your relationship with her. She recommends:
- As a friend - Drop off a meal, and make it an easy one that she can make anytime. Babs suggests something like a beef fajita dump meal, with the veggies and meat cut up and marinating in a big Ziploc. Deliver it to the new mama in a cooler, with a recipe and all the fixings, like tortillas, avocado and sour cream. That way she can make it in a crockpot soon, or stick it in the freezer until she’s ready to cook it.
- As a mom - When it’s your daughter who’s just had a baby, Babs says you have one job: pamper her. “If you can, be there as long as she needs you,” the experienced grandma explains, adding that moms can always use an extra set of hands.
- As a mother-in-law - Before the birth, check with the parents to see what you can do to support them. Babs shares that her role in helping her son and daughter-in-law is usually to stock the fridge and take the older siblings to give mom some time.
- The clip also includes a surprise guest appearance from Babs’ husband, affectionately known as “Mr. Babs.” He offers advice for new dads based on his personal experience. “As a dad, when my kids were newborns, it was important for me to step up even more than usual,” he says, adding that checking in with the new mom every day to see how she’s feeling is also very important.

- I wish I’d had Babs around after I had my babies!
- I found the best parental advice came from other parents.
- Women who create a life deserve a special treat afterwards.
