MASTERS TOURNAMENT TRADITIONS

The Masters Tournament starts today at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia. For some golf lovers, this week is the best sports week of the entire year.

For those who might not follow this tournament as closely, here’s a rundown of some of the best traditions that the tournament has to offer

  • Azaleas – The course is home to more than 30 varieties of these flowers, which bloom from March through mid-April, just in time for the event. There's even a drink on the menu there called the Azalea Cocktail, which is made from pineapple and lemon juice, gin or vodka, and grenadine.
  • $1.50 Pimiento Cheese Sandwiches – For sure, everything sold at the Masters is expensive... except for these goofy little sandwiches that they sell for a buck-and-a-half.
  • Landline Phones – There's a rule at the club ... No cell phones. Patrons can call home to check in, but only by using courtesy phones available throughout the course. If you go, you better write your phone numbers down or have them memorized.
  • Champions Dinner – On Tuesday night of Masters week, past winners get together at Augusta National for dinner – and last year’s winner gets to pick the menu. Earlier this week, 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler chose cheeseburger sliders and firecracker shrimp and tortilla soup to start, followed by Texas ribeye steak or blackened redfish for the main meal -- and ended with a warm chocolate chip skillet cookie for dessert.
