Study: Not Knowing How To Play Golf Can Hurt Women In Business

How’s your golf game? If you’re a woman who doesn’t know how to swing a golf club, it could be costing you at work. Female executives who can’t play golf are missing out on networking opportunities that could help them climb the corporate ladder, according to a recent study.

Many more men than women consider themselves golfers and researchers say that’s in part because women tend to have less leisure time, in general, and golf is a time-consuming sport. A round of 18 holes can take four or five hours and if it’s happening after work hours, women often have household and childcare responsibilities that keep them from hitting the links.

  • But there are real professional benefits to learning to play, as the research finds that over 70% of Fortune 1000 CEOs say they’ve done business with someone they met on the golf course.
  • And 80% of Fortune 500 execs admit golf has helped their career. So men are out there building business relationships and bonding over a shared interest, putting women who aren’t at a disadvantage.

Researchers suggest that companies should invest in golf lessons for workers, like any other professional development activity and hold those lessons during business hours. That way women aren’t forced to skip out because of after-work responsibilities.

  • I almost learned to play golf. I had lessons scheduled for September 11th, 2001. I ended up getting more busy that day a
