TikTok Debates If Babies Should Have Grown-Up Names

When it comes to naming your baby, other people always have opinions, but in the end, you get to decide what to put on that birth certificate. Recently, social media users have sparked a debate about baby names and whether you should go with something that suits them as a baby or grown-up name. British YouTuber and mom Liana Jade got involved after listening to a podcast about “ridiculous and out of control baby names,” which mentioned her baby boy, Koazy [[cozy]] in the comments.

She broke down in tears in a TikTok video, acknowledging that Koazy’s name “isn’t everyone's cup of tea,” but said it’s “cruel” to make fun of the name his parents chose. Another mom, Ruby Villarreal, recently went viral with 11-million views on TikTok after applauding another creator’s video called, “I named adults, not babies.” In Ruby’s clip, she shares that she gave her kids, five-year-old Karla and three-year-old Deluca, names they would “never outgrow.”

Baby name expert Laura Wattenberg, creator of the website Namerology, stresses that there are no “bad names,” but some are more flexible than others. She points out that less traditional names will always be seen as more controversial, but that parents shouldn’t stress about trying to pick a “professional” name or one that their kid will appreciate. Wattenberg says, “Every 13-year-old hates their name and every 25-year-old comes to appreciate their name.” Her advice for parents? Choose a name that you love and if you don’t like another child’s name? Keep that to yourself!

Scott's Thoughts:

  • If you name your baby Koazy, you can’t really be surprised people have a strong reaction to it.
  • My kids names work with any age, in my opinion.
  • They could always go by their middle name till they are older?
