The United States Postal Service has a morbid problem on its hands. Turns out the delivery office is in possession of 452 packages of unidentified cremated remains that never found their final resting place. How did this happen? Turns out shipping remains through USPS comes with some strict shipping rules like sending via Priority Mail and labeling the package with a bright orange “cremated remains” sticker. If these rules aren’t followed, the shipments could end up in package purgatory, aka: the Mail Recovery Center.
If this makes you shy away from shipping your dearly departed, your other options are either personally transporting the remains by car or airplane. However, this requires a legal death certificate, a cremation permit, and a letter from the funeral home. The parcel is also subject to routine scanning at TSA.
