Wildlife officials in California are trying to wrangle a pesky sea otter that apparently has an insatiable appetite for surfboards.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife say a five-year-old female otter has been stealing surfboards and munching on them. It's happened on at least three occasions recently in Santa Cruz. Officials are very familiar with this particular animal, who is identified as Otter 841. She was born in captivity at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and eventually tagged and released into the wild in 2021. But since then, she has been seen climbing onto boats, kayaks, and surfboards, and has become increasingly aggressive.
Wildlife officials are hoping to catch Otter 841 and return her to the Monterey Bay Aquarium until a new permanent home can be found. (New York Times)
