STUDY: THE TOP 5 PREBIOTIC FOODS FOR GUT HEALTH

You’ve probably heard of prebiotics - a form of gut-friendly dietary fiber - as it’s become a buzzword in recent years. And now, new research reveals the five foods that have the highest amount of prebiotics.

According to a new study, the findings of which were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, the most prebiotic-dense foods are dandelion greens, Jerusalem artichokes, garlic, leeks and onions. Prebiotics are plant fibers that help support gut health and are good for the body’s microbiome and they’re also packed with fiber, an essential nutrient most of us don’t get enough of.

Other foods that were found by researchers to have a good amount of prebiotics include onion rings, creamed onions, cowpeas, asparagus and Kellogg’s All-Bran cereal. Study co-author Cassandra Boyd with San Jose State University shares that because some of these foods are already a part of many people’s diets, eating to “promote microbiome wellness” may be easier than we think.

Scott's Thoughts:

  • I’m taking this as an excuse to eat more onion rings, how about you?
  • My weight loss plan with Genesis Health Solutions helped me have a healthier gut! Very low inflammatory food menu!
  • Not sure I can get my hands on Jerusalem artichokes! Never heard or seen them.
