A group of 40-something and 50-something women regularly share videos on TikTok with advice for moms and kids. They go by 4friendsover40 and their clips are heartfelt and they look like they’re having fun doing it, laughing as they sip wine, hang out and share their experience.
One of their latest videos has Jenn, Sarah, Erin and Terryl each sharing their biggest parenting mistake. The moms say they hope by admitting their regrets, we can “learn a little bit” from them.
- First up is Erin, who says her issue is a “doozy.” She says she worked from home when her kids were little and that she “kind of always did most everything for them,” and as a result, “they’re not very self-sufficient maybe.” Erin admits she thinks she probably did too much for her kids as far as cooking and laundry.
- Terryl shares that she feels like she lost her patience a little too often when her children were young. She now realizes that acting like that “makes everything worse and causes a lot of stress and frustration for everyone.”
- Sarah says her oldest child is shy and she would often find herself jumping in conversations to speak up for her daughter, but she now realizes this isn’t serving either one of them. Her advice is to let more “reserved” and “anxious” kids speak for themselves.
- Jenn explains that she was determined to make the most of her time with her daughter, knowing she wasn’t having more kids. So every night, she would lay in bed next to her little girl and read her a book, but now her daughter depends on that to be able to fall asleep. Jenn’s advice is to not stretch out rituals too long with your kids because of your own emotions.

Scott's Thoughts:
- Most of us worry so much about making mistakes and they’re owning theirs and sharing them honestly!
- I don't feel I did anything wrong. Just did the best I could.
- What’s the best thing you’ve done for your kids that’s helping them be who they are today?
