From Jackpot to Jailed

A Connecticut man said he felt like he had won the lottery back in May when he found a bag containing $5,000 in cash in a parking lot, but he's not feeling so lucky anymore.

Three months after Robert Withington picked up the bag and took it home, he has now been charged with larceny. Police in Trumbull, Connecticut say the money belonged to the town's tax department and the bag was found in a bank's parking lot. The bag was also marked with the bank's insignia and there were “numerous documents” inside identifying the town of Trumbull as the rightful owner.

Withington claims he never noticed a bank insignia, nor the documents inside and just thought it was a case of finders keepers. He said, "I walked out onto the parking lot, saw something on the ground and there was no one around so I picked it up. It’s not like I stole something. If I knew I was wrong in the first place, I would have given it right back. I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong." He's been charged with larceny and faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. (Trumbull Times)

Scott's Thoughts:

  • His story is hard to believe.
  • He found a bag of cash outside a bank and it never occurred to him that it might actually belong to the bank?
  • He shouldn't have to go to jail. He should just return the money and apologize.
