You don’t have to go broke to go vegan, in fact a new study finds it can actually save people money. The research shows following a diet that’s free of meat and dairy also comes with health benefits, including losing weight.
Researchers followed 244 overweight study participants for four months, randomly assigning half to switch to a vegan diet, while the other group made no changes to their diet.
- The results show that going vegan triggered a range of health benefits, including that most who gave up meat and dairy “tended to lose significant weight.”
- The vegan diet also helped improve metabolism and led to a drop in fat accumulation in liver and muscle cells, which improved the way participants regulated insulin, which then lowered their risk of developing diabetes.
- Removing meat and dairy from their grocery list also helped the vegan group lower food costs by about 16%. While meat and dairy alternatives may cost more, their overall cost for groceries is lower by not buying meat and other animal products.
Just like with any diet, the cost of eating vegan can vary depending on the specific foods you’re buying. Study author Dr. Hana Kahleova says their study shows, “A vegan diet is not only better for your health, but for your wallet, too.”

Scott's Thoughts:
- People are so concerned about animals being mistreated, except for the ones they’re eating!
- Our bodies are made to eat meat. However, probably not as much as many of us eat.
- I went without cheese for awhile. I think I could do without it. But not meat.
