Dating can be exciting and cringey all at the same time, especially first dates. There’s a lot of pressure to get everything right, since there’s no second date if the first one is a flop. No one gets this better than relationship expert Jacob Lucas and he wants to help us have fun on first dates.
These are the dating coach’s do’s and don’ts for the ultimate first date:
Do:
- Remember the first rule of dating is that it should be fun.
- Consider every date as an opportunity to meet someone new and have new experiences.
- Have a curious mind when dating. People like to feel like their date is interested and listening to them.
- Ask open questions to find out more about your date and to keep the conversation flowing.
- Go to a coffee shop or a bar. That way, if you don’t hit it off, you have an easy out after one drink. But if it’s going well, you can order another drink or go do something else together.
- Start off somewhere public, since it’s safer as you get to know each other.
- Pre-book a cab or Uber ride home. That way you can relax knowing you’ll get home safely and can end the date without awkwardness.
Don’t:
- Put too much pressure on yourself, dating is supposed to be fun, remember?
- Give up after a bad date. They may not be the right person, but you have to keep putting yourself out there to find them.
- Overstay your welcome. Three hours is the ideal amount of time for a first date and hopefully, you’ll leave them wanting more.
- Ask “yes” or “no” questions, instead ask questions that can get a conversation moving.
- Go to the movies. It’s tough to talk and you won’t get to know each other.
- Organize a high-energy, activity-based date. This is better saved for a third date when you know each other better.
- Double date. A first date should be one-on-one so you can talk more and get a feel for whether you click.
- Be rude. Even if the date is a dud, leave politely.

Scott's Thoughts:
- Another important don’t is don’t reveal that you already checked out all their socials, so you know more about them than you should at this point.
- I prefer first interactions to be part of a group.
- What was the best first date you’ve ever been on? Did it lead to a wonderful second date?
